How should I prepare for my session?
Just come as you are and we’ll look after you. If possible, try not to arrive on an empty stomach to ensure that you have enough energy for treatment to be effective. Refrain from alcohol on the day of treatment.
Aim to wear comfortable loose clothing with easy access to above the elbows and knees. However, covers will be available if clothing needs to be removed to maintain comfort.
In your first session, a full discussion of your health needs and requirements including your health history and current concerns and questions. All of your information will be treated confidentially. We use palpation, tongue and pulse diagnosis to guide treatment but you are always in control of what you are comfortable with.
A 30 minute treatment tailored to your condition will then commence where fine, sterile and single-use needles are inserted into specific points on the body to restore balance and relieve symptoms. A personalised treatment plan just for you is also included in your initial consultation.
How many sessions do I need?
This depends on what your general health is and the issue we are working on together, but acupuncture is cumulative, so each time you come you build on the work from the previous session.
For long term concerns, a series of 4-8 weekly treatments may be required initially followed by ongoing ‘maintenance treatments’ at less frequent intervals. For reoccurring concerns, regular treatments are the most effective, but some issues can be helped hugely with just a couple of sessions.
Does it hurt?
The needles are extremely fine; about the thickness of a human hair. For most people acupuncture does not cause any pain, however you may feel a gentle sensation from the needles during treatment. In acupuncture, this sensation is experienced when the needle reaches the desired depth and the energy or “deqi” is activated. This sensation can vary but is often described as a gentle tingling like sensation followed by a dull ache, warmth, or a feeling of soft pressure around the needle.
Is it safe?
Acupuncture is a very safe treatment when provided by a qualified practitioner. Hannah is a fully accredited member of the British Acupuncture Council (MBAcC) and the Professional Standards Authority (PSA), adhering to strict hygiene and safety protocols. We only use single-use sterile needles in a clean and appropriate environment.
Side effects are very rare but some people may experience mild bruising, light-headedness or some temporary soreness at the needle site. These effects are typically short-lived. Serious side effects are extremely rare.
Electro-acupuncture is not advised for clients with pacemakers or epilepsy.
Can I come if I am pregnant?
Of course! Acupuncture can be safely used throughout pregnancy. Here at Form Acupuncture we adjust our treatments to support you throughout your pregnancy from early symptoms such as nausea and fatigue to support later in pregnancy for anxiety or labour preparation.
